Organic Farming
There has been a rapid increase in organic farming. This is
because more and more people are aware of the chemical residues
in agricultural products. While organic products are not “residue
free” studies reveal that consuming organically made
products can help reduce exposure to hazardous chemicals.
Organic farming is a production system that avoids or largely
excludes the use of synthetically compounded fertilizers;
pesticides, growth regulators and livestock feed additives.
To the maximum extent feasible, organic farming systems rely
on crop rotations, crop residues, animal manures, legumes,
green manures, off-farm organic wastes and aspects of biological
pest control to maintain soil productivity and tilt, to support
plant nutrients and to control insects, weeds and other pests.
Purposeful usage of chemical inputs, which harm the health
of living beings and environment, is restricted in organic
farming.
Organic products
There are many reasons for going for organic products –
from the environmental degradation caused by chemicals to
the desire to support family owned farms. Even though not
scientifically proved, consumers of organic food products
claim that “Organic – tastes good and
better.” Many organic farmers focus on growing
products that are different from the usual and which also
has a good flavour. The conventional producers scorn this
as “unmarketable”. But the organic food lovers
still grow many products in different, shapes, sizes and colour,
which is well appreciated by organic lovers.
